Vegan Videos: Vegan Parenting

I thought this was an excellent video. I’ve been a vegetarian sine 1992, and have been raising my daughter vegan since birth. She is now five years old, tall for her age, and extremely healthy. She visits the doctor regularly.

There is a lot of misinformation out there about vegans and especially vegan children. I educate people and tell them instead of automatically believing what you hear do some research for yourself.

We are trying it increase the fruits and vegetables in our household. Or at least I am. With the kids, however, it has always been a challenge. One of them will gladly live on a diet of fruit and candy, but the other one…let’s just say we praise God on a day we can get three different fruits or vegetables in them. As for protein, they generally eschew nuts and totally reject beans. Milk is hit and miss, although not too bad. So meat is what is left, and unfortunately the least healthy stuff: hot dogs, anything in batter, pogo sticks, one of them like hamburgers, pepperoni. It’s not easy to feed kids.

    David,
I agree with you although my daughter is a great eater I have been around some very pick eaters. It can be hard.

My daughter is not fond of some greens like kale and collards raw they also contain protein. I add them to sweet smoothie drinks. The added bonus is she is getting extra fiber and calcium that are abundant in greens, and the drink is naturally sweet.

Other good sources of protein are nori (seaweed), quinoa, and lentils to name a few. You might have to introduce *strange* foods to your child slowly.

At times I have to do the same thing with my daughter when it comes to new foods. You could try to add some healthy foods in with the batter a great way to sneak nutritious foods into their meals. :-)

I have a vegan website where I have smoothie recipes http://therawandthecooked.com/category/juicing-smoothie-recipes/ in a lot of them I have incorporated some type of greens or nori.

The key is to begin small with picky eaters then gradually up the amount of the new food for example instead of one cup of greens try one leaf, wait a few weeks add 2-3 more.

    I hope that helps. :-)
